Not since 11 March 2011 has our industry seen such a rapid reaction to global news.
On that day 9 years ago the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami caused devastation not seen since the Chernobyl disaster of 1988. Better known as the Fukushima disaster, this was to have immediate, global and technological change to the way we work. Once the dust clouds had grounded everyone we all started to wonder where we would replenish our dwindling tape stock. Some, but certainly not all had already invested in tapeless workflows, many were simply not prepared for it.
This seismic shift toward file-based delivery and acquisition was absolutely accelerated by the events that day. Today, as we learn and watch the world reporting on Coronavirus and the spread of this horrific illness, we are seeing many businesses react. Avid (and many others) pulled out of NAB, before NAB themselves issued a statement –
“In the interest of addressing the health and safety concerns of our stakeholders and in consultation with partners throughout the media and entertainment industry, we have decided not to move forward with NAB Show in April” (Gordon H. Smith).

Business continuity plans are hastily being updated to allow for more working from home.
Giants such as Sky, Fremantle and others are trialling these methods this week with a view to refining those processes. I am sure, they too might have been at the bleeding edge of file-based working too.
But what about the rest of our industry? Some multi-site operations already have dark fibre connectivity between them. VPNs may be in place to allow secure access into the facility. Others are not as well prepared to facilitate working from home and still allowing the ‘shows to go on’.
